According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office and Public Schools spokesman, Kevin Christian, the injured student was shot in the ankle. The incident represents the 20th school shooting in the United States this year.
The over 2,000 students, who attend Forest High School, were scheduled to participate in a walk out of their classrooms as part of the National School Walkout against gun violence, according to a post on the school's Twitter account.
The shooting was the latest in a deadly series of attacks at U.S. schools. In February, a 19-year-old gunman opened fire at a Florida high school he had previously been expelled from, killing at least 17 people and injuring more than 14 before he was arrested.
