The announcement was made at the Lima Convention Centre in Lima, Peru.

This will be the third time Paris and Los Angeles have hosted the games.

Paris last hosted the Olympic Games 100 years ago. Los Angeles hosted the games in 1932 and 1984.

"You can't imagine what this means to us, incredible, so strong," Paris 2024 co-chairman Tony Estanguet told delegates shortly before the IOC voted.

"Los Angeles reflects the face of America's future and the heart of American values of inclusiveness, generosity and unity," Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said during his final pitch to IOC members.

In Paris, the games will take place at the Stade de France, which was also the venue of the 1998 World Cup final and the Euro 2016 final.

Los Angeles will host the games in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the venue of the previous Olympic games.

Paris and Los Angeles became contenders for the sporting competition after several cities dropped out over concerns over expenses and a lack of public support.
