The biggest shock of the day came in the form of three-time grand slam champion, fifth seed Stan Wawrinka's 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-1 defeat.

There was a mixed bag of results on the opening day of the third grand slam tennis tournament of the year.

Reigning French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko moved into the second round with a spirited 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus. 

Roland Garros runner-up and 2nd seed Simona Halep raced through to the second round with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over New Zealander Marina Erakovic. The Romanian broke her opponent's serve five times during a match that lasted an hour and 13 minutes.

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka fought back from a set down to claim a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over American teenager Catherine Bellis, while five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams booked her spot with a jittery 7-6(7), 6-4 win over Belgium's Elise Mertens.

Top Brit, sixth seed Johanna Konta moved through with an easy  6-2, 6-2 win over Taiwan's Hsieh Su-Wei.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova sealed a comfortable 6-3, 6-4 win over Sweden's Johanna Larsson. World number 12 Kvitova was playing only her eighth match this year, having recently recovered from serious injuries to her playing hand sustained during a knife attack at her home last December.

Top Men

Top seed Andy Murray begins his title defense with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Alexander Bublik in the opening round. He will meet German-Jamaican Dustin Brown in the second round. The flamboyant Brown fought back to seal a 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-4 victory over Joao Sousa of Portugal.

Two-time champ Rafael Nadal was in stellar form on his way to a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win over John Millman of Australia. The Spaniard sealed the victory in an hour and 46 minutes.

Ousted

Former Wimbledon runner-up and Canadian favorite Eugenie Bouchard was sent packing from the first round by Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro 1-6, 6-1, 6-1.

The biggest shock of the day came in the form of three-time grand slam champion, fifth seed Stan Wawrinka's 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6 defeat at the hands of Russian Daniil Medvedev.

Another casualty was 20 seed Australian Nick Kyrgios, who was forced to retire with a hip injury after trailing Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 3-6, 4-6.
