Pentagon Army spokesman, Lt. Col. Jason S. Brown, said the cause of the crash “is currently under investigation.”

Two United States Army pilots were killed in a crash in California, on Saturday.

According to a Fox News report, the accident took place during a routine training exercise in the desert. Both the pilot and co-pilot were killed – the first military fatalities since the start of 2018.

The Army’s 4th Infantry Division's AH-64 Apache chopper, which was based in Fort Carson, Colorado, was making its way to the National Training Center at Fort Irwin in California.

Pentagon Army spokesman, Lt. Col. Jason S. Brown, said the cause of the crash “is currently under investigation.”

“The cause is currently under investigation and next-of-kin notifications are ongoing, therefore we can provide no further details at this time,” he said.

About 37 U.S. troops died in non-combat plane crashes – more than 130% higher than in 2016 – during routine operations in 2017, Fox News reported.
