A one-year-old child and a woman were murdered on Saturday in the ongoing conflict that has plagued Nicaragua since mid-April, killing at least 170 people so far.

The child, Teyler Leonardo Lorio Navarrete, was killed by a stray bullet during an armed attack on the Mayor's Office in Managua while police officers were removing roadblocks.
Hours later, in Masaya, armed and hooded protesters attacked the municipal Mayor's Office, killing staff member Carolina de los Angeles Collado Delgadillo.
Earlier in the day, in Managua, masked rioters armed with guns, mortars and Molotov cocktails stationed near the Rubén Dario University Campus reportedly attacked local families. Three were arrested and have been handed over to the authorities.
In a statement, the National Police called for "respect for life, public and private property, the right of people to move freely" and reiterated a commitment to "peace, security and tranquility."
National protests erupted in April after President Daniel Ortega announced plans to slash pension benefits to cover a widening social security gap.
The proposed reforms triggered demonstrations that quickly turned fatal and led to demands for his resignation.
