“Peru is very privileged and its protected natural areas prove it. A new scientific species of orchid was recently discovered in the Tingo Maria National Park (Huanuco),”  said the National Service of Natural Protected Areas by the State of Peru (Sernanp) in a statement.

The delicate flower was found nestled in the center of an area of the park known as the “Throat of Sleeping Beauty,” during a study concentrated on expanding the Orchidaceae family, Sernanp said.

The botanical triumph is owed to the diligence of volunteer researchers Alex Gustavo Díaz, Enrique Yupanqui and Luis Antonio Ocupa, and Park Ranger Emiliano Carrillo.

"This type of discovery highlights the natural heritage of the country and demonstrates the good state of conservation of the park," said Lorenzo Flores, head of the national park.

Since the park’s grand opening in 1965, Tingo Maria National Park is home to at least 240 species of orchids. Three other orchid species were also found and identified as the Epidendrum nanum and Acianthera rubroviridis. Researchers have not determined if the third and final plant had been previously registered.

The results of some 81 research studies will be presented to the First National Congress of Scientific Research in Protected Natural Areas which will take place from September 26 to 28 in Lima.
