Mexico: We Need Bridges, Wall is US Internal Issue

Mexican officials say U.S. President Donald Trump's demand for a wall to be built between the two countries is an issue for the United States Government and not its Central American neighbor.

"It is an internal issue of the U.S. government," Interior Minister Alfonso Navarrete said on Tuesday. The minister made the comment during a press conference at the Palacio de Cobian, headquarters of the Interior agencies.

Trump has asked for funds from Congress to build the Mexican-American border wall he promised during his presidential campaign. The Latin American authorities said the country needs to build bridges and not walls.

The minister explained that “all friendship and neighborhood go through good times, bad times and times when they have to rethink and clarify things.”

According to the Mexican politician, both countries are joined by “very deep cultural, commercial, tourist ties, of hemispheric security, and these ties we all must try to strengthen them.”

He was also adamant that Mexico “has expressed its position with clarity and I believe that between good neighbors more than walls, we need to build good bridges” during bilateral talks.

Mexico and the United States share a border which extends 3,200 kilometers with a 1,000 kilometers-long fence. On Monday, Trump released a second budget plan, with an increase of US$191 million dollars – US$18 billion of which is allocated to border wall and detention centers.

Trump, on January 18, said Mexico was the “most dangerous country in the world.”

He reiterated that the wall is necessary to “stopping the flow of drugs” and tighten “security” for the United States.
