Mancera said at least 17,000 people have been attended to in 48 shelters.

The death toll from the earthquake that devastated central Mexico five days ago has now reached 360, with nearly half of those killed from Mexico City, according to the Mexico officials.

On his official Twitter account, Luis Felipe Puente, coordinator of the Interior Ministry’s National Civil Protection service, said that 219 people died in Mexico City, 74 people died in Morelos state, 45 in Puebla, 15 in the State of Mexico, six in Guerrero and one in Oaxaca.

Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera reported that out of 7,649 properties inspected so far, 87 percent were found to be safe. At least 1,000 buildings have been deemed uninhabitable.

Mancera said at least 17,000 people have been attended to in 48 shelters. But the earthquake has left thousands of people homeless.

Rescuers continue to dig the areas through rubble to find disappeared people. Expert search teams from Japan, U.S. and Israel are helping with the rescue operations.

“Our country can be assured that this is the number one priority (the rescue of people) and that it will not stop," Puente said at a press conference.

The magnitude 7.1-earthquake caused 44 buildings to collapse in the Mexican capital, but the APL Engineers Association estimates that about 3,000 more are at risk of collapsing because of severe fissures in walls, columns and girders.

Brigades from El Salvador, Nicaragua and other countries have been sent to Mexico to assist in relief efforts.
