Maradona Calls England's World Cup Victory 'Monumental Theft' Against Colombia

Diego Armando Maradona has slammed FIFA for what he called a “monumental theft” against Colombia following their loss to England in Tuesday’s World Cup match.

In his program “De la mano del 10,” a show where he analyzes World Cup matches on TeleSUR, Maradona decried Colombia’s defeat and argued it was not the players’ fault.

“They don’t choose the referees,” Maradona said.

The former captain of Argentina’s national team criticised United States referee Mark Geiger, who according to the football star has a history of questionable actions and shouldn’t have referred the World Cup match.

"The penalty was not a penalty; it was a foul by Kane… Why didn't he use VAR (video assistant referee)?" Maradona questioned.

England’s only goal within the game’s 90 minutes, was scored after Geiger awarded England a penalty kick.

Maradona also mentioned that in 2012 Geiger gave Brazil a controversial penalty in a match against Colombia, and in 2015 he called two penalties in favor of Mexico against Panama.  

"I'm reeling because when I spoke to (FIFA president Gianni) Infantino the first time, everything had changed at FIFA: the thieves had left, the fixes, everything... and today we saw the opposite -- an old and fixed FIFA."   

Maradona also called on the Colombian team to file an official complaint. “This must be denounced. I, as captain of the legends, say that this cannot stay like this. It is a fatal error for an entire country,” Maradona said.
