Films by more than 20 finalists from Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, Africa and Asia will be reviewed by a table of judges. Over 200 applicants vied for the chance to screen their masterpieces.

This year's festival focuses on African portrayal, analyzing documentaries by Latin American and African artists, past and present. Among the main films are Jose Massip's 'Miriam Makeba,' which tells the life of the South African singer, and 'Nova Sinfonia' by Santiago Alvarez, dedicated to the former Mozambique military commander Samora Machel.

The films will be shown throughout the island at museums, theaters and halls. The festival winner's entry will be screened in Santiago to celebrate the town's 500th anniversary.

The Cuban Institute of Cinematic Art and Industry (ICAIC) will be sharing a piece of history with a screening of two news briefs: one entitled 'The Solidarity With Peoples of Africa,' and a recording of late Cuban leader Fidel Castro, speaking at the Tricontinental Conference.

"We will have a very intense program between theoretical events, documentaries and collateral activities," said Event Coordinator Teresa Herrera.

During the week-long festival, conferences will include Afro-Cuban to Black Cubans: Africanism and Color of the Skin in the Cuban Social Imagination, by African studies scholar Heriberto Feraudy Espino.

Mexican documentary film-maker and researcher Sahudi Batalla will discuss fieldwork, and ethnographic research related to documentaries, primarily focussing on African cultural influences and slavery in Mexico.
