Grenadian Prime Miister Keith Mitchell said: "Caricom has indeed taken bold steps in developing the work plan for the Caricom Single ICT space."

Grenada's Prime Minister and former Chairman of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) Keith Mitchell says the regional bloc will soon initiate a multi-stakeholder partnership to speed up some aspects of the Single ICT (Information and Communication Technology) Space.

The objective of the project, according to the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU), is “to provide the ICT-enabled foundation for enhancing both Caricom's functional cooperation” and a borderless data and communication “technology mainframe that fulfills “the social, cultural and economic imperatives of the region.

Of the fast-track process, Mitchell said, “I must say at this juncture that Caricom has indeed taken bold steps in developing the work plan for the Caricom Single ICT space. In a few months, we will be launching a multi-stakeholder partnership to fast-track specific elements of the Single ICP space. Our steps in fully implementing this must continue to be clear, even while we push the proverbial technological envelope, so to speak, in routing out and connecting other programmes and policies to transform the community. Our people must be made to feel Caricom.”

He stressed that the heads of governments in the region “have to be the ones to place ICT at the heart of what we want to accomplish in this region.”

Mitchell's remarks came during the Caricom's Heads of Government 39th Regular Meeting, which is being hosted at the Montego ay Convention Centre in Jamaica. The event, which began on July 4, will end today.

Caricom's Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque said the conference would be an opportunity to find ways to integrate young people into the organization best.

“We need the youth with us. We need to provide them with more information so that they can advocate on behalf of the community. This is not about the Caricom Secretariat; this is about building a community for all of us so that all our peoples can benefit.”
