The Ecuadorean FIP has complied with IFFO RS procedures to be accepted into their program. The IFFO RS IP aims to encourage marine ingredient feed producers and to improve fishery management, and factory infrastructure. Compliance included ensuring they have a progressive fishery action plan, as well as a multi-stakeholder agreement.

The Ecuador FIP consists of three international feed producers; Vitapro, Skretting, and BioMar-owned Alimentsa. Small pelagics include anchovy, sardines, mackerel, and herring.

Nicola Clark; monitoring, evaluation, and learning coordinator at IFFO RS, told FeedNavigator, "It is important to note that this does not automatically mean they would be certified at the end; they will have to apply through our normal application procedures."

This means the FIP has to follow their improvement timeline and have regular checks to ensure they are maintaining their objectives, after which they can apply for certification.

Dan Lee, best aquaculture practices (BAP) standards coordinator at the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA), said the move was a major milestone towards sustainable seafood production in Ecuador.

“Markets are demanding responsibly-farmed shrimp, and this includes responsibly-sourced marine ingredients in aqua feeds. GAA’s BAP program helps to provide linkages along the supply chains to incentivize positive change and it’s impressive to see how Ecuador has stepped up to meet the challenge.”
