Uruguay's former President Jose 'Pepe' Mujica will visit Lula in the Curitiba jail in which he is being held to demonstrate against his political imprisonment.

Former Uruguayan President Jose 'Pepe' Mujica will visit Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday at the Parana Federal Police Superintendency in Curitiba, where the Brazilian presidential candidate has been held in detention since early April.

Mujica was an ardent supporter of Lula's presidency and has been trying to visit the former Brazilian president since he was imprisoned two months ago for allegedly taking a seaside apartment as a bribe in the expansive Car Wash scandal.

Mujica is due to join social movements in Curitiba to protest Lula's 12-year prison sentence in what's widely seen as a political stunt by the ruling right-wing government to block Lula from running for re-election.

The 72-year-old leftist politician insists he is innocent. Despite being incarcerated, Lula remains ahead in the presidential polls for Brazil's October presidential election. The Workers' Party (PT) has repeatedly said they will register Lula as their official candidate come August.

The Supreme Federal Court last week ruled that Sergio Moro, who administered Lula's prison term, illegally coerced the candidate to give a statement in his case by sending about 500 federal police to summon him for questioning by a commissioner.
