Sept. 16, 1982: A Day of Lebanese National Resistance

IN PICTURES: Remembering Lebanese resistance to Israeli occupation.

On Sept. 15, 1982, Israeli invaders decided that the activities of the Palestine Liberation Organization, PLO, in Lebanon were too much of a threat.

The Israeli army invaded Lebanon and Beirut fell under a six-month siege. PLO fighters were asked to leave the city, and when they did, the Israelis ordered massacres around the Palestinian camps of Sabra and Shatila in Beirut.

Immediately, people began resisting.

The Lebanese National Resistance Front (Arabic acronym ‘Jammoul’), led by the Lebanese Communist Party and other leftist and nationalist movements, was formed, conducting military operations against the invaders. The Israeli Army was eventually forced to leave the capital, announcing through speakers: "don’t shoot, we are leaving Beirut!"
