Peru's Congress has formally accepted the resignation of Pedro Pablo Kuczynski(PPK), paving the way for First Vice-President Martin Vizcarra to be sworn in as the new president at an inauguration ceremony in Lima.

"We will not shake our hand to take Peru out of the current situation; we are committed to dismantle any corrupt scheme that works in any area of the state," Vizcarra told Congress.

The ceremony took place in the Chancellery, there he received the Order of the Sun with a Great Cross distinction as well as a merit recognizing distinguished services.

Pedro Pablo Kuczynski resigned after a video was made public showing his allies trying to buy congressional votes to help Kuczynski dodge impeachment in connection with the Odebrecht scandal.

Vizcarra said the time has come to combat instability and institutional anxiety, and that Peru will overcome these trials and build a better future founded on independence and responsibility.

"I urge you to show respect, tolerance and love for the country to mark the dynamics of this new stage," Vizcarra told Congress, highlighting the division of powers "as the basis of any democracy."

A poll, conducted between March 17 and 20, indicated that only 26 percent of the population supports Vizcarra as president, but sources claim he has no plans of stepping aside.

Vizcarra was trained as a civil engineer, graduating from the National University of Engineering. He was born and raised in Moquegua and first made the move to politics in 2011 as regional governor.
