Brazil's Lula Wraps up Caravan in Minas Gerais

IN PICTURES: Topping all polls for president, Lula was met with large and adoring crowds as he tours Brazil denouncing neo-liberal president Michel Temer, who is looking to reverse the gains made during the Workers' Party's rule.

Former Brazilain President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has wrapped up the second phase of his “Lula Around Brazil” caravan, which saw him tour seven regions and 14 cities in the interior state of Minas Gerais. Here are some sights and sounds from the road trip.

“Little-Lula-peace-and-love is back,” Lula said, repeating one of his popular campaign slogans. “Maybe not with so much peace and love. I gave it to them (his judicial accusers) but they don't want reciprocity.”

In Governador Valadares, Lula spoke with residents about environmental crimes in the aftermath of the November 2015 dam burst. High-level executives from Brazilian mining companies Samarco and Vale have been charged with those crimes. In 1964, Lula's pinky finger was severed while he operated heavy machinery in a metallurgical factory in the state of Sao Paulo. He was 18 years old.

Lula speaks to the deans of federal universities and technical schools in Minas Gerais state. A total of 18 public universities and 214 technical schools were established during his presidency. Prior to Lula taking office, Brazil, a country surpassing 200 million people, had only 140 technical schools.
